    This course will introduce students to two-dimensional elements and principles of graphic design. Through problem-solving approach, formal and conceptual experimentation, students will develop clear understanding of visual communication.     This survey provides an overview of the history of graphic design from prehistoric art to the information age. Major movements and themes such as the printed book, Art Nouveau, Modernism, and the New York School are studied in the context of cultural and world events.     This course provides a foundation in the practices and materials associated with painting, and prepares students to work in oil-based media. The class examines both traditional and contemporary applications of media. Classic problems in painting, concentrating on form, color, space with related subject matter still life, landscape and figure are addressed through individual instruction based on student’s experience and needs.   • ARTS 251 - Printmaking I


    Credits: 4

    This course will provide the essential technical skills used in historical and contemporary printmaking. Through exploration, application and independent research, students will be introduced to Relief, Silkscreen, Intaglio, and Monotype printmaking techniques. Assigned reading and class discussion will address contemporary issues in print media, and students will have the opportunity to integrate all learned techniques in the printing process. This is a unique course and will be individually tailored for the printmaking student. This course is offered both fall and spring semesters. Note: Students that have taken ARTS 254 or 255 will not receive credit for ARTS 251.

  • ARTS 260 - Beginning Photography


    Credits: 4

    This course introduces the basic skills and concepts involved in analog black and white photography. These include film exposure, processing, printing and print finishing and issues of composition, as well as the development of a vocabulary with which to discuss images. Class sessions involve lab work in the darkroom, critique, lectures, and discussion. Weekly lectures, hands on demonstrations and critiques will provide the tools necessary for students to complete weekly shooting assignments as well as darkroom printing. 35mm film cameras are available via loan to registered students.   • ARTS 265 - Digital Photography


    Credits: 4

    This course introduces the basic skills and concepts involved in digital photography. These include exposure, editing, inkjet printing, and and issues of composition, as well as the development of a vocabulary with which to discuss images. Assigned readings and class discussion will address contemporary issues in art and digital photography. Examination of the functions of light and color, crucial elements in the context of image capture will be central to the course. The course includes instruction in camera operation, scanning processes, lighting, image editing software, digital workflow, and output for print.   • ARTS 305 - Intro-Graphic Design Software


    Credits: 4

    This course introduces students to basic computer skills on the Macintosh platform, using the graphics industry standard Adobe programs: Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat Pro. Topics covered will include software tools and techniques, internet use, file formats, graphics terminology, and the Mac OS. Projects will include photo manipulation and montage, computer illustration and page layout. Upon completion, students will have practice with digital workflow, using the Macintosh, navigating the web and using software as a tool to help convey their ideas. This course has been designed to support and expand upon ARTS 210, 310 and 410. Pre-Requisite: ARTS 210. and Fall semesters.

    This course is a continuation of ARTS 210 Graphic Design I and more fully explores the interaction of text, image, form and color. Through a series of design problems students will become more self-sufficient in the fundamental components of graphic communication.     This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of typography as a critical skill to graphic communication. The expressive potential of typography will be explored through its basic history and terminology and a series of directed projects to gain knowledge in the area of typeface selection, legibility and styling to effectively design with type.     An intermediate level course structured around three-dimensional design techniques and concepts that allow students to develop skills and ideas with emphasis on materials, tools, technique and process.     Credits: 4

    This course will provide the essential technical skills used in historical and contemporary printmaking. Through exploration, application and independent research: the student will have the opportunity to develop a portfolio that utilizes intaglio printmaking methods and monotype. This is a unique course and will be individually tailored for the printmaking student. The student will be introduced to large format printing, color separation, registration on a variety of papers, and various surface materials. Prerequisites: ARTS 171 or ARTS 251 or ARTS 254 or ARTS 255. This course is offered regularly. NOTE: Students that have taken ARTS 350 will not receive credit for taking ARTS 351.

    This course will provide the essential technical skills used in historical and contemporary printmaking. Through exploration, application and independent research, the student will have the opportunity to develop a portfolio that utilizes advanced silkscreen and relief printmaking methods. The student will be introduced to large format printing, color separation and registration techniques, various surface materials, and both digital and traditional printmaking processes. This is a unique course and will be individually tailored for the printmaking student. Students will have the ability to choose the printmaking methods best suited for theory-based work after researching both concepts and methods. Students may integrate all learned techniques in the printing process. Prerequisites: ARTS 171 or ARTS 251 or ARTS 254 or ARTS 255.

    This is an intermediate level course that facilitates discussion of photographic processes within the larger context of contemporary art, photography, and digital media. Working through a series of modules, students will expand their knowledge of the various facets of photography as they exist today in the fine art, social, and commercial worlds. Module topics such as studio lighting, alternative processes, and composite imaging provide a framework for lectures, demonstrations, guest lecturers and weekly shooting assignments and critiques.   • ARTS 361 - Expanded Cinema


    Credits: 4

    This course introduces students to the principles of Expanded Cinema, art of moving images/objects exhibited beyond the conventional theater. From lectures, discussions, and creative production assignments, students will learn about pre-cinema devices and ideas (e.g. magic lantern, panoramic painting, phenakistiscope, and zoetrope), while understanding the ideas of time based installation. Towards the end of the semester, students will exhibit their expanded cinema works as a group show, learning strategies on how to engage with gallery spaces and work with gallery staff. Prerequisites: CINE 121, 122, 252, for Art students, at least one 200-level Art Studio course. Spring only.

    This studio course addresses the formal aspects of the human figure through direct observation. Students render proportion, balance, form and mass of the figure. Emphasis is given to the persuasive rendering and experimentation with the drawing media. Drawing skills developed in previous classes are further refined by using a variety of drawing media.     This course provides the student with essential technical skills and conceptual ideas used in contemporary and historical works in mixed media through exploration, applications, and the analysis of historical and contemporary models. The student will be provided the necessary formal theories and techniques used to resolve and understand the process and practice of work produced in mixed media. The formal elements and principle of design will be utilized and students will use construction methods to develop critical and analytical skills to produce well-crafted and theory based projects.     This course expands on the computer skills taught in ARTS 305, broadens the students’ aesthetic experience and complements upper level design classes. Emphasis will be placed on collaboration, teamwork and positive evaluations of work in progress. Format is Macintosh platform using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat Pro. Using a variety of design agency projects, students will learn how to use applications in concert to create a professional product from conception to finished files. Real world production issues will be addressed and a digital workflow will be established. Topics covered will include file application from print to web, 4 color printing, typical ad specifications, job process, exhibit production, banner ad design and production, creating a portfolio document, troubleshooting files, production terminology and communication skills.     This open studio course allows advanced students to develop strengths and to work on areas of weakness pertaining to their own interests and choice of materials. The result is a self-designed, cohesive body of work. Relevant readings are discussed, and the artist statement is created. It aims to introduce, contextualize and explore a wide variety of drawing methods of both traditional and conceptual practices. Students are encouraged to push the boundaries as they investigate materials, subject matter, process and interpretation related to image making.     In this research experience course, students will first learn a ‘toolbox’ of molecular biology techniques. We will then apply those techniques on a research project designed by the class that surveys the presence of antibiotics resistant bacteria in the environment.
