  • MDVL 333 - Early Modern London

    Credits: 4

This course will explore the historical, physical, and spatial character and development of London in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and early eighteenth centuries. Following an introductory survey of the growth of London in antiquity and the Middle Ages, attention will be given to the development of architectural styles, such as domestic and public architecture, churches, and palaces; the spaces and circumstances of cultural production, bureaucratic administration, and commerce; and changing uses of space over time, including modes of transportation, gather points, the configuration of public and private space, and the reemergence of the city after the Great Fire of 1666. We will also examine a variety of literary responses to architecture and space (including prose, poetry, and drama), and will explore the sonic contours of London spaces, with a particular emphasis on the performance of music in a variety of venues and circumstances both public and private. Offered every three to four years.

  • MDVL 350 - Rhetorical Foundations

    Credits: 4

This course surveys major historical works both about literary and artistic representation (i.e., criticism) and how-to tracts teaching the art of persuasive speech and writing (i.e., rhetoric) from ancient Greece to early-modern England. Among questions to be considered are how definitions of figurative language and representation change from period to period and place to place. Over the centuries, some critics have considered artistic imitations to be dim reflections of the truths underlying appearances, and thus dangerous, whereas others have seen them as means for conveying the nature of reality or tools for teaching ethics. Authors include Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Horace, St. Augustine, Petrarch, Sidney, and Shakespeare. Offered most years in the fall.

It can also involve editorial assistance to the academic journal Mediaevalia and other publications, working with the editor at all stages of the publication process from manuscript review, through editing and proofreading, to develop copy-editing skills and knowledge of academic publishing. Permission of instructor required. Students who wish to participate in an internship and who have previously been convicted of a felony are advised that they will be asked about their prior criminal history. This may impede your ability to participate in certain internships. Students who have concerns about such matters, or are looking for additional information, are advised to contact the dean’s office of their intended academic program.

  • MDVL 462 - Petrarch and Boccaccio

    Credits: 4

Focuses on the major works of Petrarch, considered one of the greatest love poets of all time, and Boccaccio, who is best known for his highly entertaining (and sometimes outrageous) short stories. We will focus on the authors’ most famous writings as well as on some of their more minor works. We will explore the relation of the two authors to one another, as well as their engagement of earlier writers such as Ovid, St. Augustine, and Dante. Themes covered will include the authors’ uses and portrayals of: language and desire, the pursuit of fame, story-telling and reality, sexual repression in medieval society, chaos and order, and the roles of women. Course taught in English, with additional work in Italian for Italian majors and minors. Offered every two to three years.
