THEA 415 - MUS THEA II: Scene Study Credits: 4
Advanced course exploring score/lyric analysis, vocal technique, and performance styles of musical theatre. Students will be exposed to a full range of musical theatre styles, literature, composers, and lyricists. The course will include song preparation, audition technique, and partner/ensemble work. Students will be required to perform regularly. Repeatable. Please note: Students who received less than a B in THEA 308, 307, 310, 311, 315, or any 389 performance class must petition to and receive permission from the Acting/Directing Committee for a waiver in order to enroll in this course. This course will provide the student with private vocal (singing) instruction. Focus will be on consistent and healthy vocal technique as it applies to the singer of musical theatre. THEA 506 - World Dramatic Literature Credits: Variable
This course looks at plays from around the world as literature, using a practical theatrical lens. We will explore genre, style, conflict, plot structure, world-building, character development, language, and form, but all in an attempt to understand how theatre artists use these tools to bring shows to life. You will: participate in discussions; read approximately one play a week; attend live performances; take open-book quizzes; create/watch video presentations; and complete writing assignments with both analytic and creative elements. THEA 507 - Int Acting II:Meisner Technque Credits: Variable
Students will engage in the creation, presentation and analysis of a series of prepared structured improvisations. This sequence of exercises, and their applications, are rooted in the core objectives, principles and teachings of Sanford Meisner; all of which form the basis of The Meisner Technique. The class focuses on the truth of the actor’s behavior, paring away what is unnecessary, helping the actor achieve an un-self-conscious revelation of their inner life, responding moment to moment off of their partner and strengthening their imagination. THEA 508 - Intrmed Acting: Scene Study I Credits: Variable
For students who wish to continue the study of acting in greater depth, this acting workshop approaches scene and monologue work in an organic way based on the principles of Stanislavski. Students will deepen their awareness of the beginning acting techniques and concepts, and learn new psychophysical methods to explore scene work. These new methods and exercises will form the basis for the student actor’s investigation into the root of impulse, intention, character and action. Assignments will involve creative responses that will deepen the actor’s investigation of presence, partner, circumstance and action. An introduction to movement training for the performing artist that focuses on physical communication through physical action. Students investigate ‘self-use’ in areas of breathing, alignment, and body language in order to recognize and eliminate unnecessary tension and habitual physical patterns, and thereby free themselves to respond creatively. Students explore the principles of various physical theatre techniques, as well as the foundations of movement: time, space, energy and effort as they inspire movement through creative impulse. Introduction to and exploration of a detailed progression of exercises designed to undo habitual physical and vocal patterns, deepen connection to the breath, and encourage a relaxed and freer use of the vocal mechanism. Using techniques based on voice trainers Linklater, Berry & Rodenburg, students will increase resonance, explore flexibility in pitch, range, and articulation. As we work with releasing the voice through the body, we will work viscerally with language and text, transforming communication and awakening interpretive skills. This class is a writing workshop for students to study the techniques of classic and modern playwrights and to develop writing intended to be performed on stage. Students will complete dramatic writing assignments, culminating in a polished and revised 20-30 minute theater text. This course will cover a variety of hand drawing, rendering, and painting techniques that are applied in professional theatrical design. This may include graphite, color pencil, pastel, charcoal, water color, and gouache applications. Also this will cover finer hand drafting techniques that are used by designers in varying ways. There will be a section of the course that covers computer rendering as combined with hand rendering as utilized in theatrical design.
