MUS 304 - Intro To Ethnomusicology

Credits: 4

Examines central themes and methods in ethnomusicology today, explored through the study of music in several different cultural regions. Focus includes the study of musical style and the meaning of music in varying cultural contexts; debates over the impact of technology, colonialism and politics on musical change; the benefits and drawbacks of globalization on local music making; and the category of “world music.” Relationship between methodology and musical style is also studied by comparing ethnomusicological approaches with those used for the study of Western art music. Prerequisite: MUS 217; restricted to music majors/minors. Every fall.
