SPAN 351 - Intro to Spanish Linguistics Credits: 4
This course provides an introduction to Spanish linguistics and establishes the basis for the application of linguistic principles. The course begins by exploring the Spanish language by means of phonetics (the sounds of a language) and phonology (the interaction of sounds). Building on this, the discussion continues with topics in morphology (word formation and verbal inflection) and the description and organization of data dealing with syntax (how words combine to form phrases and sentences). The course ends by analyzing regional varieties of Spanish (dialectology) where students apply the aforementioned fields (phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax) in order to compare and contrast varieties of Spanish spoken worldwide. This course counts for the Spanish major and minor. Prerequisite: SPAN 251 or equivalent, or instructor’s permission. Offered regularly.
