Credits: 4

This course investigates American musicals from throughout musical theatre history that seek to explore Americans’ relationship to race, religion, gender, and sexuality. Students analyze libretti and listen to scores from both Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals from the 1920s through today. Through dramaturgical research, students contextualize these musicals to better understand the world they create onstage, the history of race, religion, gender, and sexuality in America, and the time and culture in which they were written. Particular attention is paid to how these musicals depict the experiences of African Americans, Jewish Americans, Latinx Americans, LGBTQ Americans, and certain immigrant communities. Offered regularly.
