History of Decorative Arts and Design is an introduction to the significant art and design movements and periods from antiquity through the late twentieth century. Through an examination of both high-style and vernacular material culture, students will view objects and interiors in relation to each other and to world history. This course will use a variety of media to examine each period, including fashion, interiors, architecture, furniture, metalwork, textiles, and graphic design. This course is uniquely suited for all students interested in creative fields, including actors, directors, and designers, as well as anyone interested in gaining visual literacy in design history. Grading will be based on participation, two oral presentations, a midterm and final exam. Offered biannually.
