TRIP 325 - The Craft of Translation Credits: 4
This course introduces common challenges and themes that arise for the translator, regardless of context and language-pair; the theory and practice of translation, viewed through a cross-cultural and multidisciplinary lens; and the role and work of translators in different contexts. Student will understand how translation forms our world; what is lost and found in translation; how to translate literature; what matters in regard to cultural cues, fluency and transparency, register and tone; what changes when translated text is humorous; how the translator navigates the author-translator-reader triangle; and how translators are treated. Knowledge of another language is helpful but not necessary. Offered regularly.
