AFST 235 - African History Since 1800 Credits: 4
This course is an overview of modern African history since 1800, covering a chronological range of two centuries of African history. It incorporates classic works in the field as well as drawing on the latest research in economic history, sociology, and political science. We will read on the
following topics: the abolition of the slave trade from Africa, the scramble for Africa, colonial rule, decolonization, pan-Africanism, post-independence politics, the end of apartheid in South Africa, and the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions. Offered spring semesters, alternating years.
