ANTH 514 - Sexuality Studies in Anthropol

Credits: Variable

Examines current work in sexuality studies, emphasizing ethnographic studies but extending to historical and interdisciplinary scholarship. Begins with treatment of the histories of sexuality studies, including the emergence of feminist sexuality studies and queer anthropology. Most of the seminar will examine current work in sexuality studies with input from students shaping the specific topics pursued. Across our readings, we will give particular attention to the ways sexuality articulates through and is articulated by differences of race, class, gender, nation, and colonial experience, and thus with social power and relations of privilege and subordination. While this seminar does not primarily focus on queer anthropology, it substantively engages the growing body of LGBTQIA+ work in anthropology. Offered every other year.
