ANTH 465 - The Body

Credits: 4

Examines how bodies are produced as socially meaningful and in what embodiment consists, drawing on social theories of gender and sexedness, identity and difference, sexuality, heteronormativity, and racialization. Investigates how large-scale social processes (colonialism, nationalism, neoliberalism) are interpolated through specific bodies. Explores cultural differences in understandings of the body and enactments of embodiment and, thus, comparative questions about materiality, performativity, and bodies as cultural artifacts. Sociocultural Anthropology course. Prerequisite: ANTH 166 or 221 or consent of instructor.
