GEOG 234 - Urban Geog: Global Linkages Credits: 4
Over half of the global population now lives in urban areas, with more and more people moving to cities around the world each day. This class explores both why and how urbanization is taking place and to what effect. While cities draw people in with their bright lights and messages of opportunity, we also find some of the greatest inequality in today?s cities. In this class we will examine the global forces that link cities to one another and to the rural, exurban, and suburban areas that help fuel their growth. We will look at both similarities and differences between today?s global cities and using key concepts and approaches in urban geography, we will consider the spatial patterns within and between urban landscapes from the local to the global scale.
