TRIP 325 - The Craft of Translation

This course introduces common challenges and themes that arise for the translator, regardless of context and language?pair; the theory and practice of translation, viewed through a cross?cultural and multidisciplinary lens; and the role and work of translators in different contexts. Student will understand how translation forms our world; what is lost and found in translation; how to translate literature; what matters in regard to cultural cues, fluency and transparency, register and tone; what changes when translated text is humorous; how the translator navigates the author?translator?reader triangle; and how translators are treated. Knowledge of another language is helpful but not necessary. Offered regularly.
