AMS 365 - Race for Glory:GrkCivUnderRome Credits: 4
Edgar Allan Poe once wrote longingly of “the glory that was Greece, / And the grandeur that was Rome.” But what was Greek glory after Rome had conquered Greece? It was in many ways an effort to relive past greatness while fitting into a new reality. Cities of the eastern Mediterranean saw a cultural resurgence, but they also saw an upsurge in rivalry among star athletes, celebrity orators, everyday folks. Students will study the cultural production ? literature, art, oratory ? shaped by the new reality and will produce speeches on topics of their choice, though in the spirit of that age. Offered every other year.
