AMS 370 - LQBTQ Antiquity

Credits: 4

In this course we will study ancient Greek and Roman literature with a focus on LGBTQ identities. We will consider how identities based on gender, sexual behavior, and sexual desire were established in ancient Greek and Roman societies and were depicted in the surviving literature and art. We will try to answer three key questions: 1) How can (and should we) apply modern identities to ancient behaviors/people? 2) How were ancient Greek and Roman sexual & gender identities as well as behaviors different from our own? 3) What sorts of continuities exist between the ancient past and our modern world(s) when it comes to LGBTQ identities? Offered every other year.
