AMS 220 - Women: AncientEgypt, Greece&Rome

Credits: 4

Following the arc of womens natural life cycles from birth to death, through investigation of law and religion, politics and labor, enslavement and freedom, ethnicity and socioeconomic status, and especially gender and sexuality, we will examine and re-constructas best we canthe daily lives and socio-cultural values of women across the long histories of ancient Egypt and the worlds impacted by Greek and Roman expansion around the Mediterranean. Through investigation of texts, documents, artifacts, and expert scholarly inquiry, we will study how differentials of power dynamics and status shaped womens functions in their personal families/homes and their civic/ethnic collectives, (or others imposed upon them), establishing perceived bounds of normativity and transgression around their sexualities, bodies, minds, and every aspect of their intersectional identities.
