MUS 331 - Introduction to Composition
This creative-project-based course introduces a wide range of techniques, approaches and issues in music composition. Incorporating fundamental techniques from the tradition of Western classical music, the course also explores methods associated with recent trends in popular music, contemporary art-music composition, and non-Western musical cultures. In addition to honing their skills in creating melodies, accompaniments, arrangements, and rhythmic figures, students will also gain an ability to turn short ideas into complete pieces of music. Musicians working in any style or genre are welcome. Prerequisite: MUS 217 or Instructor’s Approval. An ability to read music is required. Every fall. 4 credits.
