Interdisciplinary in nature and global in scope, the Judaic Studies Department brings together the study of history, religion, literature, culture, and language (Hebrew, Yiddish, and Ladino). We offer majors and minors in Judaic Studies and Hebrew, as well as minors in Israel Studies and Religious Studies. The department also houses the Religious Studies Program and the Center for Israel Studies. We commit to teaching students of all backgrounds and to familiarizing them with the rich fabric of Jewish life. Our curriculum emphasizes critical thinking skills and the development of cultural competencies, preparing students for careers in a range of fields, among them law, education, public policy, museums and non-profits.
Honors
The Honors Program in Judaic studies includes both a four-credit fall research seminar and a four-credit spring honors thesis. Students complete their thesis in the spring under the direct supervision of a faculty thesis advisor. The program is open to seniors majoring in Judaic studies who carry a GPA in the major of 3.5 or higher. The fall research seminar may not count toward the major. The spring honors thesis is in addition to the 10 required courses for the major. Admission to the program is by application, including a personal statement, brief writing sample and résumé. For more information, contact the director of undergraduate studies or the department chair.
