Ancient Mediterranean Studies, BA

A Bachelor of Arts in Ancient Mediterranean Studies (BA) is offered through the Department of Middle Eastern and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (MEAMS). Ancient Mediterranean Studies is a flexible program that puts together studies of Greek, Roman, and Mediterranean history, culture, and literature from various departments, including late antique, medieval, and Middle Eastern elements. It does not require Latin or Greek language study, although studying Ancient Greek and/or Latin is possible within this program.

Program Requirements


University General Education Requirements


All Binghamton University undergraduate students are required to fulfill this set of university-wide requirements to ensure that every graduate acquires the essential core of a SUNY university undergraduate education. Please refer to the General Education page for more information.

Harpur College Requirements


All students in Harpur College must fulfill additional requirements designated by Harpur College to complement and extend the general education requirements. Please refer to the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences  page for more information.

Course Requirements


Ancient Mediterranean Studies


This specialization offers a grounding in the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world, Greece and Rome especially, but does not require reading knowledge of the original languages.

Requirements

Students interested in the major in Ancient Mediterranean Studies must complete the following requirements (10 courses in total):

  • One Foundations in Ancient Mediterranean Studies course
  • Six courses listed or cross-listed under AMS, GRK, or LAT
  • Three courses in any aspect of ancient Mediterranean culture, history, language, literature, archaeology, philosophy, or art as approved by the Undergraduate Director

No more than two introductory-level (100-level) courses shall count toward the major.

Any course in which a student receives a grade of P or D shall not count toward the major.

At least six courses must be taken at the 300-level or above. Students are advised to work with the Undergraduate Director when selecting courses.

Teaching practica (e.g., AMS 391, GRK 391, LAT 391) shall not count toward the major
