The BA in theatre provides students with the opportunity to take courses in areas such as: acting, directing, dance, design and technical theatre. Our program emphasizes a mix of classroom study with practical, hands-on experience in University productions. Students majoring in theatre will choose from one of three concentrations: Acting/Directing, Dance and Design/Technical Theatre or the department also offers a Musical Theatre, BFA .

All Binghamton University undergraduate students are required to fulfill this set of university-wide requirements to ensure that every graduate acquires the essential core of a SUNY university undergraduate education. Please refer to the General Education page for more information. Harpur College Requirements
All students in Harpur College must fulfill additional requirements designated by Harpur College to complement and extend the general education requirements. Please refer to the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences page for more information. Major Requirements
Students must complete a minimum of 56 credits for the major. Students take the core theatre courses and the courses required for their chosen emphasis. A. Core Course Requirements
Students must complete the following requirements for the Theatre major: History and Literature Courses: (12 credits)
Introductory Acting Course: (4 credits)
Technical Courses: (12 credits)

- Technical Practica (numbered THEP 213-216, 270-276, 370-376, and 470-476):
- Upper-level technical practica in Costume Shop (2 credits)
- Upper-level technical practica in Scene Shop or Lighting Hang/Focus (2 credits)
- Upper-level technical practica in Run Crew (2 credits)
B. Emphasis Course Requirements
Acting and Directing Emphasis (28 credits):
Dance Emphasis (28 credits):
- Four credits of lower-level dance
- Eight credits of upper-level dance
- Four credits of dance somatics
- Four credit upper-level elective in dance theory
- Four credits in music theory
- Four credits in introductory music performance
Design/Tech Emphasis (28 credits):
- Eight credits of design/technical classes
- Four additional credits of upper-level technical practica on a mainstage production or an additional 4 credits of design/tech class
- Eight credits of 400-level practica in the area of student specialization
- Four credits in drawing
- Four credits in history of art or architecture

*Students pursuing the transfer path should fulfill this requirement with THEA 206 **Performance Practica are granted for participation in performance assignments, but are not required (Numbered THEP 260-266, THEP 360-366, and THEP 460-466) ***Students pursuing the Transfer Path in Theatre must fulfill this requirement with ENG 245 Additional Information About the Program
Pass/fail grading option is not acceptable for the courses taken to satisfy the theatre major. Residency Requirement: The Theatre Department requires that at least 28 credits be taken in residence. Of those 28 credits, four credits of technical practica must be taken in residence. It is possible to transfer any of the core courses (including an introductory acting class) into the Department of Theatre, as well as practica and courses outside the major, up to the limit prescribed above. Dance classes must require at least 63 hours of in-class dance practice to transfer.
