Each year, Binghamton University invites a small number of outstanding incoming first-year students to join the Binghamton University Scholars Program, a highly selective all-University four-year honors program. The Scholars Program provides incoming students of exceptional merit with a broad and flexible program of curricular and extracurricular enrichment to encourage these important goals:
- Community-building and wellness
- Diversity and cultural awareness
- Intellectual curiosity and interdisciplinary thinking
- Leadership and civic engagement
- High-impact learning
The Binghamton University Scholars required curriculum is:
- A shared first-year experience course (SCHL 127 )
- Special topics courses created for, and offered only to, scholars that also typically fulfill general education requirements (SCHL 280/281/282/283)
- A distinctive course promoting leadership and civic engagement (SCHL 227 Community Engagement: Where It Starts, How It Works, and Where You Fit In)
- High-impact learning experiences and culminating projects/experiences in the junior and senior years for scholars (SCHL 327 and SCHL 427 )
Graduates of the Scholars Program earn “President’s Honors” or “All-University Honors” recognition upon graduation, dependent upon completion of program requirements and cumulative grade point average.
All first-year scholars live in the Newing College residential community in the Scholars Learning Community and can remain in scholars’ housing beyond that.
