Program Description

The Lighting Minor offers students an interdisciplinary pathway in lighting, bridging technical and artistic skill sets across the disciplines of theatre, cinema, and studio art. This minor provides students the chance to develop specialized skills in lighting, preparing them for a range of applications across various creative fields, including performance, visual arts, media production, architectural environments, and more. Students will gain hands-on experience in the technical and design aspects of lighting, including theory and execution, supported by foundational and advanced coursework across multiple disciplines.

The minor is structured to guide students from foundational knowledge to advanced techniques in lighting. Initial courses build a base in lighting technology and its applications across different media, covering essential techniques and concepts across production and photography. Students develop skills in systems of instrumentation, visualization, composition, implementation, and critical analysis, gaining an understanding of the tools and equipment essential for lighting work in performance and production environments.

Students from disciplines within as well as outside of the arts can utilize these foundations to identify more career applications for their focuses. Students are encouraged to experiment, gaining both practical skills and theoretical understanding in lighting technology and design, enhancing their capacity to contribute to and innovate from the arts.
