Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Advanced Certificate

Post-graduate nurse practitioner (NP) certificate programs are designed for DNP prepared nurses who seek advanced clinical preparation as a nurse practitioner. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible for nurse practitioner licensure in New York state and will be eligible for national certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Corporation (ANCC) or The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

  • All students are expected to be competent in statistics, research design and knowledgeable about nursing theory and aware of current professional issues.

  • Supervised clinical practice is a required component of the program. Whenever possible, clinical experience will be arranged near the student’s geographical area.

  • Program requirements vary from 21-33 credits depending on the certificate selected, and can be completed in up to four semesters of study.

Program Admission Requirements


Students holding a DNP degree in nursing may enroll in the post-graduate nurse practitioner certificate programs. Depending on prior educational preparation, course requirements may be eligible for waiver by the graduate nursing program director with the submission of official transcripts reflecting successful completion of previous coursework (grade of B or better) and related supporting course syllabi. All students wishing to pursue a post-graduate nurse practitioner certificate must satisfy the general conditions and procedures for admission to Binghamton University’s Graduate School.

Applicants must meet admission criteria provided by Graduate Admissions. The rules and regulations indicated in this Academic Guide at the time of a student’s matriculation into the University are the ones to which that student is held.

In addition the following are required and will be evaluated:

  • A DNP degree in nursing from an ACEN-, CCNE- or CNEA-accredited school of nursing program

  • A Masters of Science in nursing from an ACEN-, CCNE- or CNEA-accredited school of nursing program

  • A Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an ACEN-, CCNE- or CNEA-accredited school of nursing program

  • A current, unencumbered license as a registered professional nurse in the U.S. Please upload a PDF of your NURSYS license verification (review directions for uploading your NURSYS license

  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals who can comment authoritatively on the applicant’s academic achievements and/or work or internship experience related to the program. Recommendations from coworkers or friends will not be accepted. Appropriate recommenders include previous or current faculty references or individuals in supervisory positions. 

  • Submission of a 500-word personal statement that addresses: why the student is seeking a post graduate certificate in general and specifically at Binghamton University; unique aspects of the student’s background that will contribute to the DSON graduate community (for example, extracurricular, work or volunteer experiences); and goals the student hopes to achieve upon completion of the program

  • Résumé or curriculum vitae

  • If an applicant has completed nonclinical graduate coursework specific to the “3 Ps” (i.e., Concepts in Health Assessment for Nursing in Advanced Clinical Practice (NURS 502), Advanced Pathophysiology Across the Lifespan (NURS 518), Advanced Pharmacology for Clinical Practice (NURS 519), official transcripts and course syllabi will be required to be considered for waiver. If applicants completed an advanced pharmacology for clinical practice course more than five years from the time of admission and has not been employed as a nurse practitioner in a clinical practice setting, applicants will be required to complete the Decker School of Nursing  Advanced Pharmacology for Clinical Practice (NURS 519). See the Decker School of Nursing Transfer Waiver process.

Gap Analysis Process for All Post-graduate Certificate Nurse Practitioner Students

Prior to the first semester of enrollment, registration, a gap analysis will be performed for DNP prepared students holding a DNP degree and who are enrolling in a post-graduate nurse practitioner certificate program. This gap analysis will require the post- graduate student submit previous course syllabi and official transcripts reflecting successful completion of coursework completed during the primary nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist graduate nursing program. Students must have earned a grade of B or higher for courses of at least three credits to be considered for waiver. The results of the gap analysis will provide specific courses and clinical experiences that will be required to earn the advanced certificate. Clinical courses from a prior program will not be considered for transfer or waiver. This gap analysis will be completed prior to the first semester of enrollment.

*NURS 502/611, NURS 518/612, and NURS 519/613 may be waived if completed at another institution based on transcript and course syllabi evaluation by the program director.

Additional Information About the Program


No petitions submitted received in the semester of graduation will be approved by the Graduate School.

Binghamton University is not authorized to issue Forms I-20/DS- 2019 for international students seeking F/J non-immigrant status for the DNP program.
