Asian and Asian American Studies Minor

Location(s): Main Campus

The minor in Asian and Asian American Studies consists of 6 courses and requires the following:

1 core course in Asian Studies
1 core course in Asian American and Diaspora Studies
4 additional courses, which may include up to 2 Asian language courses

Of the 6 required courses:

2 or more courses must be at the 100 or 200 level.
2 or more courses must be at the 300 or 400 level.
1 or more courses must be at the 400 level.

Course Requirements

1 Core Course in Asian Studies

At least 1 course must be an Asian Studies Course. Students can choose from the courses listed below or from other approved courses as they become available.

AAAS 105 - Intro To Asian Philosophy
AAAS 106A - East Asian Civilizations
AAAS 106B - East Asian Civilizations
AAAS 210 - Intro To Japanese Culture
AAAS 211 - Korean Civilization
AAAS 273 - Chinese Civilization

1 Core Course in Asian America and Diaspora Studies

At least 1 course must be an Asian American and Diaspora Studies Course. Students can choose from the courses listed below or from other approved courses as they become available.

AAAS 200 - Intro to AsianAmerican Studies
AAAS 275 - History of Asian America

4 Additional Courses

Students should complete 4 additional courses, which may include:

Courses in Asian Studies, or non-language AAAS courses on one or more Asian countries
Courses in Asian American and Diaspora Studies, or non-language AAAS courses on one or more Asian diasporas, including in the U.S. and the Americas at large
A maximum of 2 Asian language courses, or CHIN, JPN, and/or KOR courses.

Note: There is no language requirement for the AAAS minor. However, up to 2 Asian language courses, or CHIN, JPN, KOR courses, may be applied toward the minor.

Additional Requirements and Information

In addition to the above requirements,

Students must earn a C or better for a course to count toward the minor.
A course must be 3 or more credits to count toward the minor.
Language courses (CHIN/ JPN/ KOR) may not be taken Pass/Fail.
No more than 1 non-language / AAAS course may be taken Pass/Fail.
No more than 1 course may be an independent study.
Residency Requirement: At least 4 courses must be taken at Binghamton University.
