Harpur Wide Combined Degree Programs

In addition to the programs listed below, students are able to pursue a series of Harpur wide combined degree programs found here.

4+1 BS-MS Materials Science and Engineering Program

The 4+1 degree program, which has led to a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (BS) with an emphasis in Materials and a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering (MS) in five years, gives all students a strong research background combined with a strong foundation in chemistry and materials science. It requires completing all components of the Materials Track of the Chemistry BS. Participation in three semesters of laboratory/research work from CHEM 397 , CHEM 445 , CHEM 497 , or CHEM 598  must be included within the existing BS requirements. In order to complete the five-year option, students are also required to complete all requirements of the MS degree in materials science and engineering, including a thesis or project. 12 credits taken in the fourth year at the graduate level may be applied to both degree programs. Students in the 4+1 degree program receive the BS degree after completing their undergraduate requirements.

Students are admitted to the 4+1 degree program at any time up to the beginning of their fourth year. Admission to the 4+1 degree program is limited to students who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in both the major and overall. Students will need to maintain this GPA to stay in the program. In order for students to complete this program within five years, three of the courses required for the BS in chemistry (with materials emphasis) are replaced by the more rigorous graduate course equivalents-e.g., CHEM 411 , CHEM 444  and CHEM 498  by CHEM 511 , CHEM 544  and CHEM 598 -and count toward both degree requirements.

Undergraduate credits: 126. Double-count credits: 12. Graduate credits: 30.

4+1 BA/BS-MA Chemistry

Students have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (BA/BS) and a Master of Arts in Chemistry (MA) in five years. Interested students should see their advisor early in the third year to discuss requirements.

Undergraduate credits: 126. Maximum Double counted credits: 8. Graduate credits: 32

4+1 BA/BS-MS Chemistry

Students have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (BA/BS) and a Master of Science in Chemistry (MS) in five years. Interested students should see their advisor early in the third year to discuss requirements.

Undergraduate credits: 126. Maximum Double counted credits: 8. Graduate credits: 32.

Pharmacy Pathway BA Chemistry-PharmD Program

Students have the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry (BA) and a Doctorate in Pharmacy (PharmD) in seven years. Students should see the Harpur College Academic Advising Office for questions regarding the curriculum for the undergraduate degree and prerequisites for pharmacy, and a chemistry faculty advisor for biology major requirements. See the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences for questions regarding the pharmacy program.
