Business Administration, MBA

Our Master of Business Administration is a STEM-certified, nationally-ranked, and AACSB-accredited program. The STEM MBA program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the primary functional areas of business, while also teaching them the fundamental data analytics and technology skills critical for the evolving business world. The goal is to prepare students with the most important skills needed in today’s global market, including cognitive flexibility, problem-solving, analytical thinking, technological fluency, and strategic leadership. The MBA program is grounded in a team-based approach to learning, which capitalizes on the benefits of the student body’s diverse academic, professional, and cultural experiences.

Students may pursue the MBA on a part-time basis. Part-time students are subject to the same requirements as full-time students and are taught by the same faculty. 

Students who wish to complete a concentration may choose from accounting, business analytics, entrepreneurship, finance, leadership and consulting, marketing and management information systems.

Four-Semester STEM MBA


The Four-Semester STEM MBA program requires the completion of 54 credit hours of graduate coursework, including courses in economics and statistics (which may be waived based on prior coursework). The option is designed for students of all academic backgrounds, meaning no business or accounting undergraduate degree is required. 

During the first year of the program, students will take courses centered around the core business concepts and principles every manager should know. In the second year of the program, students will have the opportunity to explore elective course offerings, including cross-disciplinary electives.

Admissions Requirements


Applicants must provide: 1) an Excel skills badge before starting the program; 2) a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.3 or higher; 3) two letters of recommendation; 4) a personal statement; 5) a current resume; 6) unofficial transcript(s); and, 7) $75 application fee.

International applicants: In addition to the required application materials, international students must also submit 1) English proficiency test scores, 2) a passport, and 3) an international student financial statement form (upon acceptance).

Program Requirements


The Master of Business Administration degree is awarded if the candidate has:

  • Completed all required coursework.
  • Maintained the equivalent of a B average in courses, including core requirements approved by the program director and presented for the degree.
  • Fulfilled residency requirement, and all course requirements, with no credit for graduate courses in which a grade equivalent to less than C (C- needs permission of graduate director) has been received.

A candidate for the MBA degree must complete all requirements for the degree within five years after admission to the school. Exceptions may be made for a part-time student when such exceptions are recommended by the graduate program director in consultation with the dean or dean’s appointee.

Internship Requirement


Students enrolled in the four-semester MBA program are required to complete an internship (for credit or not-for-credit) following year one of the program. 

1-Year (12-Month) STEM MBA


The One-Year (12-month) STEM MBA option is an accelerated route designed for students with diverse backgrounds and professional experiences, providing them with the necessary skills to advance as leaders in the global business environment. The program requires the completion of 48 credit hours of graduate coursework. The option is designed for students of all academic backgrounds, meaning no business or accounting undergraduate degree is required. The summer courses are held synchronously throughout Summer Terms I and II and will build a strong foundation in the essential business fundamentals that every manager must understand. The fall and spring classes are held in-person and will strengthen your own analytical and decision-making skills while also collaborating in task-oriented teams. Your studies become more individualized as you refine your interests. You can choose from a wide range of elective courses, including cross-disciplinary options.

Applicants must provide: 1) an Excel skills badge before starting the program, and grades of B or higher in microeconomics and statistics taken within the last 4 years; 2) a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.4 or higher; 3) two letters of recommendation; 4) a personal statement; 5) a current resume; 6) unofficial transcript(s); and, 7) $75 application fee.

The Master of Business Administration degree is awarded if the candidate has:

Course Requirements


1-Year (9-Month) STEM MBA


Students who have earned an undergraduate business or accounting degree within five years of applying to the MBA program and who have graduated from an AACSB-accredited school may apply to the nine-month MBA program. The nine-month MBA program requires completing at least 30 credit hours of full-time graduate coursework. Students may be admitted in the fall or spring semester.

Applicants must provide: 1) an Excel skills badge before starting the program, unless you have earned your undergraduate degree from the School of Management; 2) a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.4 or higher, with grades of B or higher recommended in S and J core classes (grades of C- or lower will require students to retake the S and/or J core business classes); 3) two letters of recommendation; 4) a personal statement; 5) a current resume; 6) unofficial transcript(s); and, 7) $75 application fee.

Course Requirements


Concentrations


Graduate students may select a concentration to gain in-depth knowledge and specialized training in specific aspects of business. Concentration elective guide sheets showing approved courses for each concentration can be found in the SOM Master’s Program Admissions and Student Services Office. 

  • Each student enrolled in the MBA program may declare a concentration.
  • To complete a concentration in accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, leadership and consulting, management information systems, and marketing, students must take a minimum of 16 credit hours (unless otherwise noted).
  • Students completing the business analytics concentration must take a minimum of 20 credit hours (unless otherwise noted).  
  • Most courses required as part of a concentration are only offered once per academic year.

Accounting


Only students who have earned an undergradaute degree in accounting from a U.S. college are eligible  to register for ACCT courses at the graduate level. The accounting concentration focuses on core concepts and procedures for generating accounting information, and the various ways it can be utilized to make business decisions. The accounting concentration requires 4 accounting classes (16 credits) chosen from the following courses, unless given permission to use ACCT 555 from undergrad to fulfill a graduate level accounting concentration course. 

Business Analytics


Students in the business analytics concentration will learn how to use modern technologies and data analysis techniques to engage in strategic decision-making and make projections of future outcomes. The business analytics concentration requires 5 classes (20 credits) to complete, unless given permission to waive MIS525.  

Entrepreneurship


The Entrepreneurship Concentration will provide you with the theoretical and practice-based background needed to manage new ventures in start-ups and at established organizations. You’ll have the opportunity to work with faculty, alumni working as venture capitalists, and local business owners and entrepreneurs to create and propose new business plans. The entrepreneurship concentration requires 4 classes (16 credits) to complete. 

Finance


The finance concentration provides students with the opportunity to learn about core money management principles for businesses, firms, governments, and individuals. Emphasis is placed on the utilization of analytical tools to engage in effective operational and investment strategies. The finance concentration requires 4 classes (16 credits) to complete, chosen from the following:

Leadership and Consulting


The leadership and consulting concentration is for students interested in understanding the dynamics of people in organizations and how to communicate effectively as a leader in order to create systemic change. Students will learn the fundamentals of creating a culture of adaptivity and responsiveness to the organization’s changing needs. The leadership and consulting requires 4 classes (16 credits) to complete, chosen from the following:

Marketing


Students in the marketing concentration learn the fundamentals of studying consumer behavior to make data-driven, integrated marketing decisions. Coursework emphasises brand markets, competitors, and product portfolios in today’s highly competitive global market.
