The Sociology Department’s graduate program offers a transdisciplinary learning environment where students grapple with real-world crises and social injustice.  Our faculty invites students to engage with epistemological critiques of the social sciences, such as post- and decolonial theory, intersectional feminist theory, critical race theory, Marxism, and world-ecology.  Our faculty engage critically with how scholars do ethnography and historical research across the disciplines. Our program invites graduate students to take history seriously in formulating the problems and interpretations of the present. It encourages students to contemplate transnational and world-historical processes within which apparently local and national problems arise. We welcome faculty and students from around the world.

Students typically earn an MA in Sociology en route to pursuing their PhD at Binghamton University, although students can pursue the Sociology MA program as a terminal master’s degree.
