Harpur Wide Combined Degree Programs

In addition to the programs listed below, students are able to pursue a series of Harpur wide combined degree programs found here.

4+1 BS-MS in Materials Science and Engineering Program

Students interested in completing both the Applied Physics track in the Physics BS program and an MS in materials science and engineering in five years have the opportunity of doing so. Admission to the combined program is limited to students who have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 in both the major and in all subjects. Students finish the majority of coursework for the bachelor’s degree in a little over three years. In the fourth year, students combine bachelor’s and master’s-level courses. In the fifth year, students are admitted to the Graduate School and focus solely on graduate work, including research with MSE faculty. See the MSE program website for more information on pursuing a 4+1 degree.

Undergraduate credits: 126. Maximum double counted credits: 12. Graduate credits: 30.

4+1 BS Applied Physics - MS Mechanical Engineering Program

A 4+1 BS in physics (applied physics track) and MS in mechanical engineering (project option) degree program enables students to complete both degrees in a five-year period. Acceptance into the program requires a GPA of 3.3 or higher. Students interested in the program should begin by applying to the 4+1 degree program during the fall of the junior year. A 4+1 Intent Application is available on BU Brain. In addition, students must apply for formal admission to the Graduate School during their senior year.

In the 4+1 degree program, students may take up to three graduate-level ME courses as technical electives for the BS in Physics in the senior year. These three courses also count toward the MS ME degree requirements. For mechanical engineering electives that are co-listed as 400/500 level, students in the 4+1 degree program should register for the graduate-level course for the course to count toward the BS Physics and the MS ME. 4+1 students must also complete either ME 211  , ME 351  , or ME 421  during their junior year. Students should meet with the Undergraduate Director of Physics to discuss prerequisite courses and questions regarding curriculum in the undergraduate portion of the program. Students should also refer to the Mechanical Engineering MS  section of the Academic Guide for the requirements for the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, project option.

Undergraduate credits: 126. Maximum double counted credits: 9. Graduate Credits: 30
