Business Administration 4+1 Programs

Master of Business Administration 4+1


These special programs allow highly qualified and well-motivated undergraduate students to earn an undergraduate degree from Binghamton University and an MBA from the School of Management in only one additional year of study. These programs can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. A part-time schedule will extend the program’s length.

SOM/STEM MBA 4+1


Our SOM/STEM MBA 4+1 option is designed exclusively for current undergraduate students in Binghamton University’s School of Management studying Business Administration. The nine-month MBA program requires completing at least 32 credit hours of full-time graduate coursework. Students may be admitted in the fall or spring semester. 

Our STEM MBA curriculum is designed to prepare you with the essential tools needed to be effective leaders in today’s rapidly changing corporate, non-profit, and public sectors. This carefully crafted curriculum builds on your undergraduate business degree and moves you rapidly into advanced coursework. You will strengthen your own analytical and decision-making skills while also collaborating in task-oriented teams. Your studies will be individualized as you can choose from a wide range of elective courses, including cross-disciplinary options and customized independent studies, and, with guidance from faculty, design interdisciplinary projects aligned with your career goals. This approach deepens the connection between your passions and your professional path. 

Admissions Requirements


Applicants must provide: 1) a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.4 or higher; 2) grades of B or higher in S and J core business classes (grades of C- or lower will require students to retake the S/J core business class); 3) an unofficial transcript; and, 4) $75 application fee.

Currently enrolled SOM students studying Business Administration will apply in BU Brain using the 4+1 Graduate Program Application. The deadline to apply for a fall start is March 1. The deadline to apply for a spring start is December 1.

Program Requirements


The SOM/STEM MBA 4+1 degree is awarded if the candidate has:

  • Completed all required coursework.
  • Maintained the equivalent of a B average in courses, including core requirements approved by the program director and presented for the degree.
  • Fulfilled residency requirement, and all course requirements, with no credit for graduate courses in which a grade equivalent to less than C (C- needs permission of graduate director) has been received.

A candidate for the MBA degree must complete all requirements for the degree within five years after admission to the school. Exceptions may be made for a part-time student when such exceptions are recommended by the graduate program director in consultation with the dean or dean’s appointee.

  • Four graduate management electives
  • Four technical graduate management electives 

Watson/STEM MBA 4+1


Our Watson/STEM MBA 4+1 option is designed exclusively for current undergraduate students in Binghamton University’s Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science. Students enrolled in the Watson/STEM MBA 4+1 program are required to complete at least 36 total MBA credits between their undergraduate and graduate years, unless otherwise noted in the program requirements, including coursework in economics (which may be waived based on prior coursework).

You will strengthen your own analytical and decision-making skills while also collaborating in task-oriented teams. The Watson/STEM MBA 4+1 program requires a two-step admissions process: 1) conditional admission to the 4+1 program in the spring of your junior year of undergraduate studies, and 2) formal admission to the Graduate School during your senior year of undergraduate studies. At the end of your senior year, you graduate from Watson College with your bachelor’s degree and proceed into the second year of the MBA program as an official graduate student.

For conditional admission, applicants must apply by March 1 of their junior year using the 4+1 intent application in BU Brain. Applicants must provide: 1) an Excel skills badge before starting the program; 2) coursework in statistics and microeconomics with grades of B or higher, taken within 4 years (these are prerequisite or co-requisite to graduate classes); 3) a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.3 or higher; 4) two letters of recommendation; 5) a personal statement; 6) a current resume; and, 7) unofficial transcript(s).

For formal admission, applicants must apply by March 1 of their senior year using the 4+1 graduate program application in BU Brain. Applicants must provide: 1) unofficial transcript(s); 2) coursework in statistics and microeconomics with grades of B or higher, taken within 4 years; 3) $75 application fee; 4) minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of a 3.0; and, 5) minimum GPA of 3.25 for all 500 level classes taken during senior year with no grades less than a C.

Program Requirements

Harpur/STEM MBA 4+1


Our Harpur/STEM MBA 4+1 option is designed exclusively for current undergraduate students in Binghamton University’s Harpur College of Arts and Sciences. The program is compatible with most Harpur undergraduate majors and allows students to complete their first year of MBA coursework during their senior year. This program requires completing 18 MBA credits during the senior year (along with microeconomics and statistics), and at least 30 MBA credits during the graduate year. 

Students in the following Harpur programs are excluded from the 4+1 option: BA Art and Design, BA Music, MusB in Music, BS Geology, and BA Theater.

Internship Requirement

Students enrolled in the Harpur/STEM MBA 4+1 program are required to complete an internship (for credit or not-for-credit) following year one of the program. 

Concentrations


Graduate students may select a concentration to gain in-depth knowledge and specialized training in specific aspects of business. Concentration elective guide sheets showing approved courses for each concentration can be found in the SOM Master’s Program Admissions and Student Services Office. 

  • Each student enrolled in the MBA program may declare a concentration.
  • To complete a concentration in accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, leadership and consulting, management information systems, and marketing, students must take a minimum of 16 credit hours (unless otherwise noted).
  • Students completing the business analytics concentration must take a minimum of 20 credit hours (unless otherwise noted).  
  • Most courses required as part of a concentration are only offered once per academic year.

Business Management BS - Economics MA 4+1


Business Management BS students in the School of Management have the opportunity to complete their bachelor’s degree and an MA in Economics in five years. To allow completion of both degrees in five years, students must take ECON 160, ECON 162, ECON 360 (micro theory), ECON 362 (macro theory), MATH 224 and MATH 225 or MATH 220, and Statistics as prerequisites to admission in the program. Two graduate courses, taken in the fourth year, may double count between programs. These credits are flexible in where they apply based on a student’s situation and can be worked out with the Program Directors.

Students may apply to the department for admission to the five-year program in the second semester of their third year. Admission to the fifth year is by application to the Graduate School and is conditional on earning an average GPA of 3.0 in the two graduate courses taken in the fourth year.

Economics majors may not pursue this combined degree program.
